With development of oral health and science always evolving, there is a wider understanding that teeth, even for those that had treatment decades ago, are always on the move.
Some may experience this gradually, others may notice this starting to happen shortly after treatment; they are the most susceptible to movement straight after treatment. The best way to combat this is long term use of retainers, which are used to maintain the position and setting of the teeth.
After treatment, you will be given an aligner to wear during the evening and night. You will be advised as to how often and for how long for by your specialist. It will be more frequent during the first year or so after treatment, after this time the frequency will be reduced.
If you have already had orthodontic treatment (no matter how long ago) and are still happy with the positioning of the teeth but have noticed some change, Ipswich Orthodontics Specialists will be able to advise you on how you can prevent further movement.
There is more than one type of retainer to consider:
Clear Retainers
These aligners are removeable and made from a robust, thin and clear plastic, which is custom-made. Whilst you are not advised to wear them when eating or drinking (water is permitted), they are fitted, discreet and comfortable to wear whilst talking, relaxing and sleeping. The evenings and night are the best time to get the most wear out of the retainers.

Bonded retainer (fixed retainer/ permanent retainer)
A custom-made thin discreet wire that is secured to the inner surfaces of the teeth with tooth coloured material. This is not removable but is not impactful on day to life due to their positioning. You are able to eat, play sport and talk comfortably with this in place. A benefit of this retainer is the low maintenance and high efficiency due to the constant support on the teeth.
